Equator Art Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Singapore artist, Willy Tay. For his first solo show after a long period of rarely exhibiting, Tay has produced five new works that will be displayed in the Project Room. These paintings reveal the gradual evolution of his style and new approaches to this medium.

For this new series of works, Tay plays with the subtle tonalities of the colour blue. Here, he depicts new subject matter: vases, bonsai and islands, which float within an empty landscape. The notion of spatiality is central to Tay’s work; the forms of these objects are enlarged and clustered within the composition. The subject, painted in darker tones of blue, is almost submerged beneath the surface. The stillness of the composition is punctuated by oxidised cast iron fillings, forming the small brown splotches across the surface. These marks balance the negative spaces within the composition. The surface is layered with light washes of paint in pale bluish-grey hues. His painterly processes are clearly visible: drip marks seep down the canvas, creating a blurred effect. These new paintings reveal a shift in aesthetics from earlier works and reveal Tay’s experimentation with new modes of expression, new techniques and exploring new imagery.
