> ONLINE GALLERY > Reach for the Stars

This unprecedented period challenges us to keep our distance from what is most innate – the deep-rooted need to socialise, to be physically present in our interactions. How do we feel if we can’t touch? To keep safe, we use digital apparatuses to extend ourselves out into the world. This piece is about those endeavours, awkward and unnatural, yet very human – after all, we have always tried to bend nature to our will. The colours and title reference the Singapore flag, whose stars symbolise goals of our better selves, which we should all reach for, in our own ways, from our own homes, for now.

About the artist
Kar-men has just graduated from the Lasalle MA Fine Arts program, her first formal foray into an artistic practice. This venture into art was motivated by her need for an open-ended space to define research, and combine critical analysis with storytelling and chance. Extending her previous research on everyday power dynamics, Kar-men peruses different modes of communication to uncover links between identity formation, interaction and language. Her practice deals with participatory exchange – archived conversations, found video footage or experiments in which she alters normative social spaces and tracks different dialogues that emerge.
