Living with Myths X: Singaporean Words and Images with Gwee Li Sui and Sonny Liew
19 Aug 2015 - 19 Aug 2015  7.30 - 10.30pm

Living with Myths, a core endeavour of Project 50/100, is a monthly seminar series with the aim of exploring the myths that shape our Singaporean identity. The tenth edition will focus on literature and comics. In Singapore’s Literary Myths, Gwee Li Sui will question the most established notions that frame Singaporean literature, hoping that the frame itself is brought under scrutiny. In Storytelling, Sonny Liew traces the journey to his tackling of the history of Singapore in The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye.

According to the “Singapore Story", Singapore grew from a culturally divided and deficient colony into what it is today: a vibrant, independent state, where wealth, political stability, and the arts work hand in hand. But to what extent is a history of literature that follows this trajectory, with social identity being a strong focus, fabricated?

Gwee Li Sui is a poet, graphic artist, and literary critic. A familiar name in Singapore’s literary scene, he has written and lectured on a range of cultural subjects.

Sonny Liew is a Malaysia-born, Singapore-based comics artist who has worked on titles with Marvel Comics, DC Comics, First Second Books, Image Comics, DC Vertigo and Disney Press and has received Eisner nominations for his work among other honours.
