Ota Fine Arts was established in 1994 in the Ebisu area in Tokyo. For 20 years, the gallery has defined itself as being a pioneer of Japanese contemporary art. Since its inception, Ota Fine Arts has promoted various Japanese artists, including internationally acclaimed Yayoi Kusama.
In 2003, the gallery moved to Roppongi and later to a location in the Tokyo bay area until 2011. Now, since its relocation back to Roppongi at the very centre of Tokyo city, Ota Fine Arts has been expanding the variety of its programmes. Ranging from painting to sound and video, sculpture, installation and performance, the gallery represents an array of highly capable and unique artists. While Ota Fine Arts continues to support its represented artists, it also strives to provide opportunities to up and coming talents.
In September 2012, the gallery inaugurated a space in Singapore’s art-complex Gillman Barracks. With this new branch, Ota Fine Arts hopes to continue forging rich collaborations with new artists from the region.
Over the last few years, one of the main goals of Ota Fine Arts is to bring more regional character and commonality within the “Asian cultural belt” — a broad area that spans the Middle East to South, Southeast and East Asia — into its programmes. Ota Fine Arts strongly hopes these programmes will convey a stridently new aspect of contemporary Asian art today.
Tomoko Kashiki (b. 1982, Kyoto, Japan)
Kashiki's languid women are a repeated motif in her paintings, existing within an intimate and surreal world. Born in Kyoto in 1982 where she still works today, Tomoko Kashiki graduated with both an MFA and PHD in painting from the Kyoto City University of Arts Graduate School. She has participated in international exhibitions including the 7th Asia Pacific Triennale of Contemporary Art (2012), "ARSENALE 2012": The First Kiev International Biennale of Contemporary Art (2012), the Yokohama Triennale (2011) and "Bye Bye Kitty!!!" at Japan Society Gallery in New York (2011). In addition, her works are included in a number of public and private collections, including the Museum of Old and New Art (Tasmania, Australia), the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane, Australia) and the Toyota Art Collection (Japan). Her debut solo exhibition in Singapore was held at Ota Fine Arts, Singapore in January 2014.
Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929, Matsumoto, Japan)
Well known for her use of dense patterns of polka dots and nets, as well as her intense, large-scale environments, Yayoi Kusama works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, film, performance, and immersive installation. Born in Japan in 1929, Kusama came to the United States in 1957 and quickly found herself at the epicenter of the New York avant-garde. After achieving fame through groundbreaking exhibitions and happenings, she returned to her native country in1973 and is now one of Japan's most prominent contemporary artists. The largest retrospective dedicated to Kusama toured the Reina Sofia, Madrid (2011), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011), Tate Modern, London (2012) and opened at the Whitney Museum, New York on 12 July 2012. At the same time her Louis Vuitton line was unveiled and designed in collaboration with creative director Marc Jacobs. Her tour will continue throughout museums in Asia and Latin America until 2015.
