Christopher Kulendran Thomas, When Platitudes Become Form, 2014

Exhibition

The Synchronised Power of Our Mass by Christopher Thomas Artist Talk with Curator, Jan 18, 4pm

Collaborating with distant co-conspirators, Christopher Thomas (UK) combines art, fashion and covert strategies to re-imagine the possibilities of accelerated consumption. The displaced people of [M]alee have been driven from their homeland by ethnic cleansing backed by strategic international investment. But how can the benchmarks of connoisseurial consumerism - like art and fashion - that now flourish in their former territory be mobilised to redirect networked flows of power, capital and desire? Engaging directly in commercial processes, Thomas devises tactical intensifications of crisis towards capitalist hypertension.

Christopher Thomas (b. 1979) is an artist of Sri Lankan origin, based in London and Berlin. Thomas manipulates the processes by which art is distributed in order to set in motion the mechanisms of social change. Since graduating from the MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths (London) last year, institutional solo shows of Thomas' work have been held at the Centre for Contemporary Art (Tel Aviv) and Mercer Union (Toronto). His work is currently included in Tate Liverpool's historical survey 'Art Turning Left: How Values Changed Making 1789-2013' and forthcoming exhibitions include the CCS Bard Galleries (New York), Art Geneva 2014 and Art Brussels 2014.
