“Where Does It All Begin?” Contemporary Abstract Art in Asia and the West

“Where Does It All Begin?” brings together 5 important artists from Asia (Zhu Jinshi, Christine Ay Tjoe, Su Xiaobai) and the West (Pat Steir, Peter Peri). They belong to two generations and all make abstract work. Abstract art may be a universal language, as claimed by some of the earliest advocates in the West. However this claim tends to obscure the fact that the sources of this language are many and varied, ranging from Chinese calligraphy through European surrealism to abstract patterns in traditional Indonesian culture. This claim also tends to regionalize these histories and underplays the interaction between them.

Curated by Philip Dodd, the acclaimed British arts writer and broadcaster, this exhibition explodes the myth that contemporary art from Asia is dependent on Western art, while revealing and celebrating the complex and ongoing dialogue between Western and Asian abstract art. This exhibition is mounted at a time when abstract art is becoming central again to the global art world after a period where conceptualism seemed to reign supreme.
